STORYLINES:It’s a matchup between the runners-up in the Pac-12 and Big 12 championship games, which what turns out to be the 25th anniversary of the Alamo Bowl … TCU is the only team to face a pair of Heisman Trophy finalists this year, losing twice to Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, winner of the 83rd award … Stanford running back Bryce Love, the fifth Cardinal in nine years to finish second in the Heisman balloting, needs 47 rushing yards to break the single-season school record of 2,019 yards on the ground set in 2015 by Christian McCaffrey … It will be tough sledding against the Horned Frogs, one of only four teams in the nation to allow fewer than 100 yards rushing per game … “They’re just so fast and physical with the point of attack,” Love said. “They do what they’re taught and they execute really well. You can really see why they’ve been so successful.” … Stanford lost to TCU in ‘07 & ‘08 against Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, who prevailed 38-36 in Palo Alto before a 31-14 victory in Fort Worth … TCU coach Gary Patterson is undefeated in five games against Pac-12 opponents … While the Cardinal makes its debut in the Alamodome — a return appearance to Texas after last year’s 25-23 triumph in El Paso against North Carolina in the Sun Bowl—  TCU is two years removed from a 47-41 rally in triple overtime against Oregon in the Alamo Bowl … “You know, I’ve heard about the games here, and how passionate people are,” Stanford coach David Shaw said. “So I know it’s going to be loud, I know it’s going to be exciting. It’s not lost on me that we’re playing TCU in Texas, not too far away from TCU.”

STATS THAT MATTER: TCU linebacker Travin Howard, the Defensive MVP of the Alamo Bowl in 2016 with 13 tackles and a sack, leads the Horned Frogs in tackles for a third straight season … TCU defensive end Mat Boesen is tied for fourth nationally with 11½  sacks, which include school and Big 12 records for 5½ sacks earlier this year against Baylor — half a sack off tying an NCAA mark … Coming off a fourth appearance in six years in the Pac-12 championship game, Shaw needs a victory to record another 10-win season at the helm on The Farm … Stanford defensive lineman Harrison Phillips leads the team with 7½ sacks and 100 tackles, trailed by safety Justin Reid and linebacker Bobby Okereke with 97 and 91 tackles, respectively … The trio will be tasked with slowing down TCU quarterback Kenny Hill, a transfer from Texas A&M who has thrown for 21 touchdowns and six interceptions … “I think No.1, we need to tackle,” Phillips said. “The way our defense is set up, there’s going to be 1-on-1 opportunities for us and them, and we have to be the person to get them down and rally and play third down defense, and red zone defense. And if we do get beat, let’s rally, get them down, and go play goal line defense. So they’re going to throw punches but we’re going to wear them down like we have
