“Blade 2049”, It seems that, finally, after thirty-five years, we are before the definitive version of ‘Blade Runner’. At least this has been denied by Denis Villeneuve, director of the new film ‘Blade Runner 2049’ that opens on October 6. The sequel, which retakes the story thirty years after the events evoked in the Ridley Scott classic, seems to come to close the circle of alternative versions that have happened in the last decades.
On this occasion, Villeneuve seems to have enjoyed total creative freedom. No wonder that, despite being his first major blockbuster, the director accumulates titles such as ‘The Arrival’, ‘Sicario’ or ‘Prisoners’ in his track record. A good creative streak that explains that the producers have trusted in their criteria and have not cut their wings. That is, no, there will be no “director’s mount” of ‘Blade Runner 2049’ because the version we will see in cinemas will already be the director’s editing. On the other hand, relying on the director’s judgment, this time, would serve as catharsis with respect to the first film (remember the “little successful” happy ending imposed by the studies in the original version)
Thus, this new version we find some “poetic licenses”. A longer duration (2 hours and 32 minutes), non-recommended cannabis scenes for children under seventeen and a predominance of real scenes with special effects above visual effects. An election that actress Ana de Armas (Joi in the film) has pointed out as a plus point, for not leaving “nothing to the imagination” and facilitate filming. Nuances that mark, in a way, the difference; and is that, as pointed out by the director: “you do not have to have seen the original film to understand or enjoy the sequel.
‘Blade Runner’ has had seven different versions over the last few decades. While we know of the overflowing and surprising creative universe of director Ridley Scott, it is also well known the economic interest of pulling archive and versioning film hits. Can we trust that this will be the definitive version of the classic, or will Scott continue to exploit the goose that lays the golden eggs?.
‘Blade Runner’ premiered in theaters in the United States in 1982. A commercial version that was not, however, the first. That same year an initial prototype version had been projected in Denver and Dallas (March 1982) and a different one was presented test preview in San Diego (May 1982). The poor reception of the public in both samples, forced the modification of some scenes for a more commercial version. A “sweetening” that consisted in the elimination of certain scenes difficult to understand and that “happy ending” that we all remember with the voiceover of Harrison Ford. A narrative stuck a bit with shoehorn and that the same actor recognized as “unnatural in the film”, not to say “surplus”, go.
